A FARNWORTH shopkeeper is launching two initiatives to support local homeless people and young children after winning a second major industry award.

Baz Jethwa, who owns and runs the Campbell Street and Plodder lane Costcutter stores, recently presented a cheque for £1000 to local charity Make a Wish – and has now pledged to do even more to help good causes in Bolton.

He and his staff have committed to providing a local homeless charity with a weekly supply of fruit and vegetables.

As well as this he has set up a new initiative at the Campbell Street store to launch in April, working with local schools to provide children with free fruit when they come into the shop.

Mr Jethwa said the local community was important to himself and his staff. He said: “Last year saw us crowned Independent Retailer of the Year at the Retail Industry Awards and we’re thrilled to have now won this second accolade from one of the most prestigious industry awards.

"We’re delighted to be recognised for our hard work and are always looking for ways to give back to the local community, which is why we are offering fresh produce to the homeless people and children in the area.”

“By offering each child that comes into store one or two pieces of fruit, we are encouraging them to eat well and make healthier choices. Thanks to our recent store refurbishments, we are now able to offer more fresh produce to customers”

Mr Jethwa, who owns and runs both shops with wife Dhara, was named Best Independent Store for his Campbell street location at the Convenience Retail Awards in London last week.

The award was recognition of their commitment to service, high standards and product range, particularly their commitment to supporting local produce.

The award comes after he was named Independent Retailer of the Year at last year’s ceremony, he plans to open another Costcutter later this year.
