A South Asian confectionery store has opened its doors on Manchester’s famous Curry Mile.

Sajida Choudhury launched her latest venture, Barfia Manchester, a franchise of Barfia London which offers a range of Asian sweets and savouries with a modern twist.

She said, "I remember the first time I encountered Barfia London at a wedding. It was love at first sight. Once I’d tasted it I knew that I simply had to bring it to Manchester.”

There is something tangibly different about the sweets and savouries made by Barfia London.

In addition to the flavours, the deserts are eggless, gluten-free and vegetarian and therefore they can be eaten by people from across the South Asian religious spectrum.

Barfia London is also the national sponsor for the Pink Ladoo campaign, which is raising awareness about gender inequality in South Asian communities.

Sajida has run several businesses in the past including a property business and a children’s boutique.

“I love the idea that a new generation will re-discover their roots in the fusion flavours that we offer and even people who’ve never tried Asian sweets before will find something they love. Anything which draws people together and strengthens their identity is a great thing.”
