Is it down to an abundance of tempting choices, a lack of time to cook or just plain laziness?

Whatever the reasons, there can be no doubting London is the takeaway capital of the country.

Londoners chomped their way through £1.4 billion worth of meals last year, more than any other region.

Chinese and Indian are the top choices but there have been huge surges in the popularity of other cuisines such as piri piri, sushi and African food.

The takeaway industry supports 27,000 jobs in London, again more than any other part of the country.

Research was conducted by the Centre for Economic and Business Research and commissioned by online and mobile ordering service Just Eat.

Graham Corfield, Just Eat’s UK managing director, said: “We know takeaways contribute a huge amount to London’s diverse culture but what many don’t realise is the enormous impact takeaway restaurants – often small, independent, and family-run – make to its economy. “ Just Eat has launched the first British Takeaway Awards.

A ceremony will take place at The Savoy in London on November 9 when 15 awards will be presented.
