A new report revealed that the number of luxury consumers worldwide has increased between 2011 and 2013, proving that despite the economic uncertainty, consumers are increasingly eager to invest in quality, long-lasting products.

Clinical director Arshad Rafiq has mirrored this global trend as he launches Drakes Eye Care on Whalley Range, Blackburn.

He said: “Drakes Dental Care was established in 2008. Drakes Eye Care is our latest venture. We have integrated healthcare within one site and so provide a valuable social function.

“Today there is a massive push towards providing healthcare in the same premises.

“Look at Asda and Tesco for example. You can shop and go in for an eye examination simultaneously. This is the way forward.

“We, as an independent provider, want to do the same for our customers. We have a reputation and people trust us.

“As part of out service, we provide free NHS eye tests for our patients.”

Eye care is a booming business. In fact, 68 per cent of adults in the UK need glasses or contact lenses. According to the Optical Confederation, UK opticians performed 21 million eye tests last year alone.

Mr Rafiq reiterated this. He said: “Demand is huge. We have more than 750 frames on display. The bulk of them are designer frames. Our aim is to revolutionise optical care in Blackburn. Our designer brands include Ray-Ban, Versace, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Prada, Ted Baker, Fendi, Armani and Prada. We also have a full range of prescription sunglasses.

“Despite the fact that we are in the throes of economic hardship, you’ll find people will still spend on luxury brands.

“These types of purchases are a one-off, and people will spend on them.

“Glasses, like clothing are about making a fashion statement. Frames are just as important as your clothes and your jewellery.

“People today are very image conscious and want to emulate celebrities in every way possible.

“Often you’ll find people will want a bold pair of frames with clear lenses just to embrace a geek chic look.

“We are providing luxury products at an affordable prices. Eye care is something that people are increasingly investing in. Today people are more health conscious than ever, and as a result are more prone to looking after their eyes.

“Nobody in Blackburn has the range of brands that we have. We have invested significantly in Drakes Eye Care.

“At Drakes, we understand that for our patients the health of their families comes first, including eye care. We also understand that this can often be expensive, which is why we are providing luxury products at an affordable price.”
