Starting a business is never going to be an easy ride, particularly in this economic climate. While the British high street struggles in the face of the economic downturn, in the UK alone, SMEs make up 99% of private sector business.

Statistics from Enterprise Nation show that 74% of UK businesses have fewer than 10 employees.

Kays Younis opened Budget MOT Centre in St Peter’s Street, Blackburn, in June.

Younis revealed: “I have been a mechanic for 16 years. However, it was a long journey before I was able to open up my own business.

“Banks today are very reluctant to lend money to small businesses. I was very worried about a shortage of funds.

“I have a lot of people to thank for supporting me to open my business including Blackburn College and AMT Lawyers.

“Enterprise4All have played a key part in my success. They help small businesses in the North West of England.

“After I put together a business plan with the help of business advisor Amir Shafiq, I was given a startup loan from Enterprise4All for £22,000. I invested that money into the business.”

As we approach the throes of winter, car maintenance becomes a huge priority.

Younis said: “In the winter months, cars do not perform at their optimum.

“Cold temperatures reduce the capacity of the car’s battery. It is important to check tyre conditions.

“We do a Winter Check that is free of charge. It only takes 10 minutes.

“I would advise all motorists in Blackburn to visit us for this complimentary facility.

“Because of our location and our proximity to the town centre, very often people will drop their cars in en route to the shopping centre. We will attend to their cars whilst they shop.

“At Budget MOT Centre, not only are we looking after cars, but essentially, we are looking after the Blackburn community.

“Our prices are extremely competitive.

“We consider ourselves better than other dealerships because we foster a relationship with our customers and give them that personal touch.

“Above all, we want to ensure Blackburn motorists are safe.”

As Younis is looking forward to future growth and employing more staff, he adds, “For anyone thinking of starting a new business, I would advise them to be patient.

“That’s very important. Many times you will feel disheartened. But don’t give up. Keep working hard. Eventually you will reap the benefits.

“My business is like my baby. I want to nurture it and see it grow into a healthy and flourishing business.

“Without organisations such as Enterprise4All, Budget MOT Centre would not be here today.

“Anything that supports small businesses is a good thing – from smaller businesses larger things grow.”
