Bradford pop star Zayn Malik last night quit the social networking site Twitter after saying he was sick of getting "hate".

Zayn, 19, of West Bowling, is one fifth of the boy band One Direction, and he closed down his @zaynmalik Twitter account at 10.45pm last night.

His final message read:

"The reason I don't tweet as much as I used to is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily goodbye twitter :)"

Zayn is thought to have had abusive tweets following the surfacing on the internet of a video that allegedly showed Zayn with a girl in his hotel at the end of One Direction's US tour earlier this year.

The video is shot through a spy-hole from a neighbouring hotel room and purports to show a bouncer refusing entry to a young woman to another room, and a young man, who those who posted the video claim is Zayn, telling her to "come back later".

The video is of poor quality and the people in it are difficult to identify. But gossip sites, including that of renowned celebrity columnist Perez Hilton, claim the young man is Zayn .

Zayn has previously received abuse from fanatical "Directioners" as the band's followers are known because of his relationship with Perrie Edwards from Little Mix.

Following his departure from Twitter last night, a flood of fans begged him to return, and turned on those Tweeters who they believed had driven Zayn from the site.
