END OF AN ERA Pupils from 1969 at the then Billinge Grammar School
A BLACKBURN school which will be closing this year is holding a final reunion to celebrate its 46 years.
Beardwood Humanities College headteacher Ruby Hussain said she wanted to celebrate the achievements of the school, its former staff and pupils.
Mrs Hussain, who joined as a newly-qualified teacher in 1982, said that although it was closing, its ‘spirit’ will live on through pupils who have been associated with it because of the ethos that staff have instilled in them.
The Preston New Road school will close in summer as part of Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme.
Pupils will transfer to the new Blackburn Central High School, Haslingden Road, as well as Witton Park High School and Pleckgate High. Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High will move on to the site after it is redeveloped under the BSF.
Community engagement manager Nazmun Usman, who has worked there for 21 years, has been working with former pupils on a chronological history of the school.
She will also be putting together a memory wall of photographs for the reunion on June 16 in the King George’s Hall.
Mrs Hussain added: “We want this to be a celebration, a positive occasion. We want people to share memories of their time at the school.
“We want to celebrate our success with former pupils and staff.

The headmaster in the photo is a Mr C B Griffin who was head of the old Blackburn Technical High School which opened in 1946 .. I was one of the intake in 1951 .. The name was later changed to Blackburn Technical & Grammar School .. The school was in Blakey Moor behind King Georges Hall & the old police station on Northgate .. Sometime in the 60's the school move to Billinge & subsequently became Billinge Grammar ..
