Twickenham exploded with colour this weekend as the borough celebrated the Hindu festival of Holi, attracting almost 5,000 people to the town.

The festival, held to mark the arrival of spring, saw visitors take part in the traditional throwing of coloured powder, as well as enjoying a variety of live music and dance.

Highlights this year included extending the festival to Twickenham town centre, with performers bringing the high street to life with street theatre and music.

Church Street also hosted an Indian market, selling traditional crafts and goods.

The festival then continued at Orleans House Gallery, with the throwing of the coloured powder and a range of dance and music performances.

Richmond Council’s cabinet member for community development, Councillor Pamela Fleming, said: "The festival was a fantastic success and I’m delighted there was such a good turnout, with thousands of people attending over the course of the day.

"Fortunately the weather was very pleasant, which befits a celebration of the start of spring.

"I am also pleased that thanks to the Mayor’s Outer London Fund, we were also able to extend the festival to the Town Centre, where I know that many local businesses saw an increase in visitors, thanks to the event."

The festival was run by Richmond Council Arts Service, the Twickenham Town Centre Business Partnership and the Ethnic Minorities Advocacy Group, with a performance from Hampton Academy.
