A bus driver has gone on a rampage through the crowded streets of a central Indian city, mowing down pedestrians and leaving nine people dead, police said.
Another 27 people were injured in the mayhem in the city of Pune before police were able to arrest the 30-year-old driver. He is being held on murder charges.
Pune police commissioner Meeran Borwankar said the licensed bus driver was on duty and "just went berserk".
The Press Trust of India said police chased the bus for an hour as it smashed into cars and fleeing pedestrians. Traffic officers fired at the bus in an attempt to stop it.
Officials have said nothing about a possible motive. Bus service officials are investigating.
