There's more to life than halal food!

What I am about to share with you might get up some people’s noses but unfortunately it is the truth.

All I hear is people moaning about is ‘whether this is halal or whether that is halal.’ All the time the very same people are making a mockery of the religion they are following.

I see one person smoking weed and playing the lottery and then bothering about if the kebab they ate was halal.

Let’s put some things into perspective. Is it okay to milk the system out of housing benefit and then moan about halal food?

Yes, the issue of halal food matters but so does the rest of your life and how you live it.

A couple of times I’ve seen guys reeking of booze walk into a takeway and ask if the food is halal. I think halal food should be the last thing on your minds brothers.

Other times I have come across people who are all too happy to buy products that openly support tyrannical regimes but then make a big issue as to why they can’t eat cheese and onion crisps because it may have some yeast extract in it.

There are just as important things to tackle like those people who openly preach hatred and violence?

We can argue all day long about what is halal and what isn’t but with people dying of hunger across the world maybe we should as a community put things into perspective.

I have no issue with people enlightening one another about halal and haram - this is important knowledge we should all know.

Yes, you should question things but change begins with your own actions.

What I find offensive is when we start taking things out of context and starting malicious rumours to shut businesses down and take things over the top.

How about realising that as a Muslim you should at least have the common decency to look out for your neighbours - and not just the Muslim ones! And you are not a Muslim just because you eat halal food and don’t drink alcohol.

Ziggy, you strangely sound like one of those extremists preaching a load of nonsense. The comments in your article clearly appear to generalise muslims into a particular category which isnt the case. Yes, I agree that there are some muslims who drink alcohol etc etc and then question whether food is halal but in my opinion these only represent a tiny fraction of the muslim community as whole.

Ziggy - Great article. There is too much hypocrisy out there in our communities. It is about time our so called 'muslim' community tackled this hypocrisy head on. We are the first to shout racism from others but at the same time, someone whose heritage belongs to another country can not become a committee member of certain mosques. We are the first to ask for our employers to respect our muslim requirements but then when given namaaz breaks, take the micheal and use it to have a fag and a kit kat. There are those that will not eat fruit pastilles because of the gelatin but then during ramadan hang out in cars in town abusing women. It all stinks...

Fkhan - this may well be a tiny minority but they are a growing minority and I know plenty of people like this.

fkhan - i know alot and i mean alot of messed up muslim guys and girls in the UK..its a disgrace..there everywhere now..everywhere i go..they are always committing bad sins.. its not a "minority" like it used to be..and its going to get worse.

Two wrongs do not make a right....I know it seems hypocritical but just because your sinning doesn't mean you keep adding on to your sins elsewhere...There's always room for improvement and we should be encouraging people to do good things and get better rather than saying you're doing that i.e. of drinking so there's no point of you refraining from doing something else your religion tells you not to do i.e. eating haraam food.

When I grew up as a kid one of my favourite weekly delights and I seotn many a paper round wage on was an 8 pack of Wagon Wheels. I recall the early Muslim Priests arriving in the 1970's and we were being 'worked up' instead of living our peaceful lifes. No bread cos of the yeast extract. No Ice Cream and my heart sank when Wagon Wheels was a no go food. Well as an honest, decent, respectable tax paying member of society I am going to commit a cardinal sin this weekend and Allah forgive me. The carving is too much. I am going to eat a Wagon Wheel. Please pray for me brothers and sisters lest I get struck down.

well said Ziggy. I used to live in a Shafii based country and whenever my mate was asked if this food was Halal or that foood was Halal, he used to say 'yeh, it's Fresh Halal Roadkill' to the ones who used to enjoy the odd drink or two. I've been reading ingredient tabs since I was 5 knowing the meaning of gelatine and lard and surviving on Kosher pies as Halal food was pretty scarce at that time. However theres nothing to stop naughty and sinful unhijabed unmarried Muslimahs like me going to the pub for tequila shots then hanging out in the garden for a spliff but somehow I value my God given body & mind too much for such things. Lets focus on the bigger picture people-Halal meat is supposed to be compassionate for our livestock as well and look how we treat them in crammed up and dirty conditions,hanging them live and upside down with a tape saying Bismillah in the background with some blade chopping them up in front of them. More like Profit driven than Prophet inspired-sorry couldnt resist!
