A collaboration which began as a play based on the work of a Muslim feminist writer, has now become a project with students in India.
The play, Rokeya’s Dream, was created through the work of students at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, TARA Arts a cross-cultural theatre project, and South East London Bangaldeshi Women’s group, which meets in Eltham.
After word of the play reached India, the work has now developed into The Rokeya Project, and resulted in an invitation from the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata.
On Monday (15th) five members of the team responsible for the play flew to India to work with the university’s students and look at western responses to Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain and the play and at how other communities can react to the material.
The team will also work with children from the school founded by Rokeya and where she taught, examining a variety of themes from global warming to women’s rights.
The project has been invited to take part in an international seminar at another Indian university , during their stay.
One of the aims of their visit is to set up a cultural exchange between the Kolkata university and Rokeya’s school and Rose Bruford College in Burnt Oak Lane and Plumstead Manor School in Old Mill Road, Plumstead.
