Pair held in terror raid in bid to stop deportation

Two Pakistani men arrested in a major counter terrorism operation will challenge Government attempts to deport them from Britain.

Abid Naseer and Ahmed Faraz Khan, who are both 23, were held by police as part of Operation Pathway in April last year.

Police and the security services say they were part of a major plot, but there was not enough evidence to charge them with criminal offences.

Three other men arrested in the raids who have returned to Pakistan are also appealing to be let back in to the country.

They are Abdul Wahab Khan, 27, Shoaib Khan, 31, and Tariq Ur Rehman, 38.

Ministers say they pose a threat to national security and should remain in Pakistan. The case will appear before a hearing of the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) in central London.

Naseer, the alleged plot ringleader, was refused bail last year after a court heard he was the author of a series of emails allegedly exchanged with a member of al Qaida.

The emails referred to a “nikah” or wedding that MI5 said are a coded reference to a planned attack.

Lawyers for Naseer said the emails were entirely innocent. All the men reject the accusation they were involved in a terrorist plot.

They have waived their right to anonymity. Ahmed Khan is on bail
