Tories have some cheek

1:19pm Tuesday 13th February 2001

The Conservatives have a colossal nerve to suggest the Labour Government is not making progress on green issues (Times Letters, February 1).

As far as mobile phone masts are concerned, as soon as the Stewart Inquiry report (which Labour set up in the first place) was published the Government put forward its proposals to ensure that masts went through the usual planning processes something the Tories failed to do in 18 years.

As a resident adjacent to Copthall, I'm delighted John Prescott MP refused the application from Barnet FC to build a football stadium on the site. Mr Prescott turned down the application for Belmont Stables too. He has also made it clear that 60 per cent of new buildings should be on brownfield sites the Tories delivered only 40 per cent in their time in government.

If they are rash enough to do so I welcome the Conservatives making this an election issue as their appalling record does not stand up to any scrutiny.
