A campaigner is calling on the Mayor of London to engage with people in Harrow to help reduce violent crime in the borough.

On August 21 there was a double shooting in Rayner’s Lane and there have been a number of other violent incidents throughout the year.

Now Kuha Kumaran, community activist and member of Harrow West Conservative Association, is calling on Sadiq Khan to meet people in the community to help find a solution.

Mr Kumaran, who has lived in the borough for more than 25 years, said: “Sadiq Khan has to come to Harrow and see what is going on, listen and talk to people from all walks of life who care about the issue.

“Londoners voted for Sadiq Khan. He is the mayor and he has to safeguard people.”

“As the elected mayor he has a responsibility for everybody in London.”

Mr Kumaran said he has spoken with residents who are “frustrated” that nothing has been done to stem crime over recent months.

He said: “We used to have lads hanging around Tesco. Now we have gun crime.

“I get calls from ladies with young children and families with teenagers who worry their children will be the next victim.

“That should not be the case, politicians should have a responsibility to take care of people.”

“We have a moral duty to raise the issue and try find a solution.”

The Government is responsible for 70 per cent of the Metropolitan Police budget but since 2010 it has cut funding to them by £700 million.

The number of police officers in London has also dropped below 30,000 for the first-time in 15 years.

But Mr Kumaran is insistent that it is not just cuts in policing that are responsible for increases in crime.

He said: “The police need to work with people, there’s a gap between the police and people in the community.”

“People have a lack of trust in the authorities. The police have to talk to the people and activists to get a flavour of how people feel.”

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London, said: “The level of violent crime in London is unacceptably high and is taken extremely seriously by the Mayor.

“Unfortunately the situation in Harrow and across the city has been amplified by the Government’s crippling cuts to the Met Police and youth services.

“The Mayor and his team in City Hall are already working with Harrow, the Met and the community in tackling all crime and that includes regular meetings and visits to boroughs, as well as supporting positive alternatives to crime that will help people caught up in gangs get into employment and training through the £45million Young Londoners Fund.”
