A WOMAN who died after falling from the roof of the Primark store in The Mall Blackburn has been named.

The 26-year-old woman, named locally as Zaheeda Chopdat, from Blackburn, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital in a critical condition, following the incident which happened at 7.50am on Friday.

The area outside Blackburn Market was cordoned off following the incident and she was later pronounced dead.

The family said they were too upset to speak, a spokesman told the Lancashire Telegraph.

There were four police cars and one police van at the scene and one ambulance rapid response car.

Police officers had asked people to remove their cars from the parking spaces opposite the market to allow access for emergency vehicles.

The police tape was removed from the area a few hours later and shoppers were able to use the Blackburn Market entrance.

A police spokesman said: “Emergency services were called to reports that a woman had fallen from the roof of the Primark store in Cobden Court, Blackburn.

“The 26-year-old woman Blackburn had suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

“Sadly she has since been pronounced dead. Her next of kin had been informed.

“Her death was not being treated as suspicious.”

A taxi driver, who was waiting at a nearby rank, said: "I saw the police cars turn up at around 8am and was concerned about what was going on."

Cllr Salim Sidat, a family friend of the dead woman, has demanded people stop sharing a video allegedly showing the woman falling from the roof.

The Audley and Queens Park representative said: “It is really pathetic and really bad that people are sharing this video.

“I want everyone to stop sharing it immediately.

“It’s so inconsiderate for the family and everyone affected.”

Loraine Jones, general manager of The Mall Blackburn, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of a woman who sadly died in an incident this morning.

“We are continuing to work with the emergency services to understand exactly what happened.”

An ambulance service spokesman said: “We were called to near Primark at 7.40am.

“We sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle and we took the patient to Royal Blackburn Hospital.”
