THE family of tragic 11-year-old Asad Khan have walked out of court saying they feel “insulted”.

It happened at Bradford Coroner's Court during a fifth pre-inquest review into the Bradford boy's death.

Asad was found hanged by his mother, Farheen Khan, on September 28 last year after she forced her way into his locked bedroom at their home in Tile Street, off Whetley Lane.

Today, the family’s solicitor Ruth Bundey told Coroner Martin Fleming the family “no longer wanted to be part of the inquest” after he refused to consider evidence they considered vital but he described as “speculative” and not directly relevant to Asad and his state of mind the day he died.

Mr Fleming said he was disappointed by the family’s decision because they were important to the investigation.

He adjourned the hearing until September 14 to give them time to reflect.

Earlier in the review hearing, Mr Fleming told the family that the inquest’s scope was limited.

He said it would not be addressing any issues of bullying unrelated to Asad, or any issues around an alleged choking/fainting game that previous hearings had been told of.

Evidence the family wanted heard included a child confirming the existence of the fainting game and two other children claiming evidence he was being bullied.

“This was all rejected by the Coroner as speculation so we all walked out,” said a spokesman for the family.

At the start of yesterday’s proceedings Mr Fleming told the family: “We have been working to the maximum to get the best out of the pendinq inquest.”

After the hearing, the family spokesman said: “We feel really insulted with how the Coroner has treated us as a family and that includes how Asad’s father felt when he was summonsed to the police station by the Coroner with the electronic devices the police wanted to look at.

"He felt as though he was being treated as a criminal. We have witnesses that give the background to this story, all connected to Asad and connected with the end of his life.

"For this to be called speculative and irrelevant is a massive insult. If the Coroner is not going to take that as evidence what’s the point of us going any further?”
