Fasting for the odd day can be a challenge for some but what about the whole month if you are a non-Muslim? A year on from completing 30 fasts, Lewis Todd has been fasting throughout the month of Ramadan again.

Speaking today as Ramadan comes to an end Lewis told us, “I have stuck to the same regime as last year.

“I have to say I did put some weight on for a while but then it came off. That was mostly due to eating too much fried food when I broke my fast!

“I have to say I got addicted to Asian food!

“The hot days were really hard. I had a dry mouth for most of the day and it was very tiring and hard to concentrate at times.

“But it means you are looking forward to Iftari even more.”

Lewis Todd, aged 19, who works at Bootstrap Enterprises in Blackburn decided to fast during Ramadan just to experience what fellow workers and friends at his office were going through.

Last year Lewis was invited to spend Eid with his work colleague Ismail.

“Yes, I will be doing the same again this year. I am really looking forward to it.”

Earlier this month we also reported on Sue, from Preston, who learnt about Ramadan and Islam after meeting her husband in Tunisia 17 years ago.

After their marriage she has been fasting every year to support him.

Speaking to Asian Image, Sue said: “My husband’s family are all in Tunisia so I fast every year so he doesn’t feel alone.

“He is hugely supportive of my efforts. I enjoy the fasting otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to keep it up for so many years.”

And Tracy and Marisa Lancaster decided to fast during the month of Ramadan in a bid to raise money through Unicef UK for vulnerable children and families who suffer from poverty.

Speaking to Asian Image Marisa, 30, who is disabled, said, “I suppose one of the main deciding factors were the atrocities in Manchester done in the name of Islam.

“The terrorist was not a Muslim in my eyes. My personal experience of the Muslim culture and my Muslim friend’s response to the attack is that man was no more a Muslim than he was a peace keeper.

“I have witnessed first hand the backlash in Manchester with peaceable innocent people who have been bullied, harassed and beaten in their own town for something they despise just as much as you or me.”
