Earlier this week we had another horror attack on innocent people going about their business. But who helped to radicalise the suspect? And why are we simply not facing up the facts?

In the latest suspected terror attack a group of worshippers leaving a mosque were targeted in a suspected terror attack.

As in weeks before there was widespread condemnation from all sections of the community. And then there were the familiar questions. Why would anyone in their right mind want to kill and maim people?

Here, though there actually are answers as to why anyone would want to do this.

With most forms of extremism we have to delve a little deeper into the psychology of the individual. We have to look at who a person meets and what he reads on the internet.

There are elements in the Muslim community, as you may have read on these pages, who would rather we did not look at the ‘radicalisation’ of Muslims.

But it is an issue and problem we must face.

Yet this week another point was raised which has been pointed out before.

After the attack near the Muslim Welfare Group in Finsbury Park singer Lily Allen had to delete a tweet after suggesting that the media was to blame.

She said, “Radicalized by the British media. #FinsburyPark”

She was forced to delete some of here tweets due to the backlash from people.

And she wasn’t alone in her views.

JK Rowling said, “Again: let's talk about how the #FinsburyPark terrorist was radicalised.”

The sad fact is that in this case we only have to scroll through the websites of some of most respected national titles to see offensive comments underneath articles that suggest that Muslims are a clear and present danger.

Journalists tend to think we are in some ways immune to any claims that we may have in some way helped to ‘radicalise’ anyone.

To suggest something like this to some folk is nonsense.

But most people will agree that these has been a concerted effort to group all Muslims in one homogenous group.

The idea is to ensure that the reader is left in little doubt that the religion is threatening the British way of life.

Go on to some newspaper websites and it does not take long for anyone to come across articles written with the sole purpose of garnering racist comments.

We have respected titles who have made it their business to print information that looks to target Muslims and refugees.

This at times has reached epidemic levels where writers are clearly told by their news editors to go out and find specific stories that will help to demonise minorities.

So, Lily Allen and JK Rowling might well have been right in their assumptions.

It is time we woke up to this sad fact and stop staring the shocking levels of racism in elements of the mainstream press.
