With the onset of exam season, thousands of students will already be feeling the pressure and stress. For many Muslim students, exams this year will coincide with the month of Ramadan.

Adam Desai, aged 17, has been sharing his tips on how to cope with exams whilst fasting.

Adam was selected nationally as one of 12 students to take part in ‘The Mind Set,’ part of the mental health campaign #MyMindAndMe.

Speaking on the BBC Adam said: “The biggest thing that affected me during the whole experience was pressure not only from the school but also from my parents, as naturally everyone wants you to do well in life. It really did make it more stressful.

“I was taking my exams during Ramadan. Not being able to have a healthy breakfast meant it was a lot harder for me to concentrate during my exams and overall, just having a lot less energy. So when it came to revision it was a little less effective than usual.

“A group of us decided we’d start practicing fasting before Ramadan started. So we fasted one day a week so we’d get to know how the fasting would impact on our bodies.

“It helped me prepare.”

Adam shared tips on what to eat and drink in order to sustain energy levels whilst fasting.

“Once you have broken your fast, drink a lot of water.

“Don’t eat too much food straightaway otherwise it will make you lethargic and will make your revision so much harder.

“Just keep snacking. Take it easy on the oily and sugary food.”
