A 22-year-old man killed in a crash in Bingley early yesterday was a law graduate, his family has said.

Shumas Fakeer was a passenger in a blue Audi RS4 which hit a tree and lamppost outside a sheltered housing complex in Bradford Road shortly after 4am.

His uncle Adil Shaan said the death of his nephew, who lived in Frizinghall, had shocked people in the area.

The scene of the crash yesterday

“He was a loving family member who was never in trouble,” said Mr Shaan.

“He was a nice guy with no criminal record and well known in the community.”

The 24-year-old Bradford man who was driving was taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was later bailed pending further inquiries.

The force of the impact caused extensive damage to the passenger side of the Audi and left debris scattered across the pavement and road.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police and paramedics attended and found a blue Audi RS4 which had collided with a tree and a lamppost outside Ashfield Court.?

“The passenger, a 22-year-old man from Bradford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adam Driver, who lives opposite where the crash took place, said his flatmate was awoken at 4am by a “loud bang”.

He said: “My flatmate said people were stood around clearly distressed and someone was laid motionless next to the car.”

Shipley MP Philip Davies, whose constituency includes Bingley, said the crash was “absolutely tragic” and his “heart and condolences go out to the family at this terrible time”.

Matt Edwards, of Bradford District Green Party, has campaigned for a reduction in the speed limit on Bradford Road.

He said: “My first thoughts are with the family of the young man who has died, but there needs to be a serious look at traffic calming measures on this stretch of road. It is very wide and that gives drivers a false sense of security.

“Ultimately better enforcement of speed limits is the key to ensuring we can avoid this happening again.”

Councillor John Pennington (Con, Bingley) said he supported the calls for measures to reduce traffic speeds in Bradford and also paid his condolences to Mr Fakeer's family.

“It is a tragedy for the family of those involved, said Cllr Pennington.

“Once again it is a high-powered car involved.

“Almost every night I can hear from my house vehicles racing up and down the Bingley bypass in the early hours and why something is not done about that I do not know.

“There have been calls for traffic calming measures along Bradford Road for some time, and I have called for speed cameras on the bypass as well.

“The only problem is the financial constraints on both the Council and police.

“Something I would like to see is a having another police force set up – the traffic police – which would deal solely with traffic of all kinds, including things like trains as well as roads.

“We could have traffic police dealing with the roads which would allow normal police to focus on other crimes.

“It would have to have separate funding of course.”

West Yorkshire Police have urged witnesses to the crash or the circumstances leading up to it to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team via 101 quoting log number 317 of February 26.
