A BRADFORD driving instructor fears it is inevitable someone will be killed unless action is taken to improve safety on ‘racetrack’ roads in the city centre used by people who want to test the power of hired or borrowed cars.

Ayub Khan said “foolish” motorists in high-powered vehicles were speeding up and down Morley Road and Easby Road – sometimes reaching up to 60mph.

He said drivers used the approximately half-a-mile stretch from the Alhambra Theatre up to the double mini-roundabout junction with Dirkhill Road as a racetrack.

Mr Khan aired his concerns after a 61-year-old man was taken to hospital with a minor head injury after colliding with a car at Dirkhill Road’s junction with Laisteridge Lane on Sunday evening.

Mr Khan, of IDrive Bradford, said the road from the Alhambra to the mini-roundabouts was “almost straight”, and added: “This area has always been a racetrack for both the locals and those who wish to ‘rally’ their hired or borrowed car.

“During the summer it’s absolutely horrendous and almost impossible to sleep on a night. You are simply unable to leave the window open as someone decides it’s a good idea to race a Lamborghini or another high-powered, noisy car, and test the car’s limits.

“The cars are not designed to be driven the way they are on the roads which these foolish people with little experience drive them.

“They try to dangerously achieve 60mph-plus before the end of the road. Most are aware of the T-junction at the end of the road with a mandatory stop sign.

“Most people who race their cars have a poor and false sense of security. They will, and have, hit the wall at the end of the road which leads into All Saints Road.”

The stretch of road has speed bumps, which Mr Khan says make no difference to certain people. He said: “The speed humps only slow down law-abiding people who drive their own vehicles.

“It’s inevitable that someone will lose their life on this road and, now that we have two extra schools, it’s only a matter of time.”

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is in charge of Bradford police’s Operation Steerside crackdown on dangerous drivers, said the area was a priority for his teams.

“The Great Horton area, without going into details on what roads, is one of our main areas, outside the University and around the double roundabout.

“If there are people using it as a racetrack, they are going to get caught. We are there in either marked or unmarked cars.”

The latest Steerside figures show that 63 speeders were caught last week.

They were among 125 drivers snared by Steerside officers up to last Sunday.
