A new study has found that British Pakistani men are not playing their part at home when it comes to doing housework. Black men came out top of the list when it came to helping with housework.

The study examined the attitudes and behaviours of almost 30,000 couples tracked by the UK’s household panel study, Understanding Society. It was conducted by Professor Heather Laurie, from the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex and Dr Man-Yee Kan, from the University of Oxford.

British Indian men were seen to undertake almost 7 hours of cooking and cleaning a week.

However, British Pakistani men managed less than a mere 5 hours of housework a week.

Black men came out on top, spending an hour more a week on housework than white men.

Across all ethnic groups, women spend significantly more hours on housework than men.

Education and employment status also influenced the figures, as Indian and Pakistani men who have a degree were found to do more housework than those without.

Furthermore, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi women were found to do between four and six hours of chores a week more than white women.

Professor Heather Laurie said, “We found both differences and similarities among ethnic groups, but were surprised to see that in multicultural Britain today, white British couples are not necessarily the most egalitarian in their outlook on housework.”

Hashim Rafiq, a 34-year-old doctor said, “This survey is quite predictable. No surprise that the Asian men do the least amount of housework. I am a doctor and my wife is a doctor. We have 2 kids and we both work full time.

“So naturally the chores are split equally, from cleaning to cooking “I even learnt to make chappati’s!

“In our home we have complete equality. It couldn’t work any other way.”

Rafaqat Hussain, a 40-year-old business owner holds a different perspective about domestic chores.

“My dad never did housework. My mum never complained that my dad didn’t do housework.

“This is the way I have been brought up. Yes, my wife nags at me constantly to give her a hand with the kids.

“I’ve changed 3 nappies in my life, and we have 4 kids. I’m not ashamed of that.

“I’ll babysit the kids when my wife wants to go out, but she puts them to bed first.

“My friends all think I have my house in order. My wife cuts my toenails for me, waxes my armpits and even heats the car for me in the morning if it is cold.

“I work long hours. She doesn’t have to work. She can spend the credit cards without worrying about the bills.

“You can call it old fashioned, traditional, sexist, whatever. It’s our system and it works.”
