The hashtag 1in5Muslims has thrown up a whole host of alternative headlines to the Sun Newspaper's claims that 500,000 Muslims may have sympanthy with Jihadists.

According to the Sun yesterday, 1 in 5 British Muslims sympathise with Jihadists fighting in Syria. The front page story story was lampooned across social media.

In response to the unsubstantiated headline and story, Twitter has responded magnificently.

Meanwhile a petition caling for the Sun to apologise for 'inflammatory and extremely damaging' front page has hit over 13,000 signitures in less than 24 hours.

The peition states, "This headline and article is not only an innacurate lie but is also inflammatory and extremely damaging to our community cohesion and goes no way to helping to solve the problems we are currently faced with. We  feel this amounts to inciting religious and racial hatred and promotes Islamophobia. We must show the Muslim population of Britain that we will not let hatred triumph and that in unity, together, we shall overcome this.

"We the people demand that The Sun apologises for the utterly disgraceful article and removes it immediately."

The Sun Newspaper today predictably hit back at accusations in it's leader column stating, "If we cling to the fiction that IS have little or no support here we cannot begin to grasp why so many alienated British youths are seduced by its extremism and murder and why so many more openly promote it.

"Most of our survey, commissioned after the Paris atrocities, probed Muslim attitudes to IS specifically. No one agreeing to the statement.

“I have a lot of sympathy with young Muslims who leave the UK to join fighters in Syria” was in any doubt which fighters we meant."
