THE 5,000th baby has been born at Bradford Royal Infirmary’s state-of-the art birth centre.

Naila Naz, 33, gave birth to her third child, a girl, at 8.20am yesterday.

The girl, who has yet to be given a name, weighed 6lb 14oz, and Naila, of Heaton, said finding out her new arrival was the 5,000th baby to be delivered at the centre came as a surprise to her.

She said: “I was not expecting it when I came in, but it is a nice surprise and good to be a part of history.

“All of the staff have been amazing at the birth centre, they are all really nice, helpful and caring, and it is a really nice place to give birth as everything is close by.”

“She doesn’t have a name yet, we have a couple of favourites but we have not decided on one yet.

“We came in at 7,40am and she was born 40 minutes later which was a relief.”

The baby is Naila’s third daughter, and her older sisters, who were both with her at the birth centre, were very excited about having a new baby sister joining the family.

The £1.2 million birth centre opened its doors to its first expectant mothers in November 2012, and was officially opened in January 2013 by Bradford born TV presenter Anita Rani, who is a contestant in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing television show.

MORE HEALTH HEADLINES

The centre has seven en-suite rooms and two birthing pools, and has the added assurance of being right next door to the consultant-led labour ward, so gives women a safe and secure place to give birth.

Each of the rooms is spacious, comfortable and gives women the privacy they need, allowing them to have as stress-free an experience as possible.

The centre is led by a team of midwives who put emphasis on natural births with less pain relief, said Julie Walker, head of midwifery at Bradford Teaching Hospitals.

She said: “We were over the moon when the centre opened as it gives women an increased choice about where to have their baby.

“Now with the delivery of our 5,000th baby, we have another chance to continue the celebrations as it is another milestone.”

Funding by the Bradford Hospitals Charity and the Friends of the Bradford Royal Infirmary mean that the centre is also well-equipped to provide the best care for mothers as possible.

The maternity unit at BRI is one of the busiest units in the whole country. The consultant-led labour ward combined with the midwife-led birth centre help deliver about 6,000 babies each year.
