Woolwich neighbours calling for improved safety on their road after a shopkeeper was killed by a car say accidents are still happening.

Around 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for an in-depth  survey of traffic at Hillreach following the death of Ashwin Patel outside his shop last month.

The 58-year-old was hit by a black Saab which veered off the road at around 4pm on August 5. He died later in hospital.

Since his death, residents have renewed calls for improvements such as traffic cameras on the road. Two young children died in an accident on the road several years ago, but despite a campaign at that time, they say nothing was done.

Carrie Harman, 27, who is six months pregnant with her second child, said: "Cars are still coming and speeding down the road. It's so dangerous."

She went on: "There has to be some kind of speed calming measures put in. It's absolutely ridiculous at the moment

"Everyone here feels the same way. It's too little too late really but it has to be done before there are any more accidents.

"We just hope, this time, something happens."

According to neighbours there have been several incidents along the road even in the short space of time since Mr Patel was killed.

Councillor Matthew Pennycook - Labour's parliamentary candidate for Greenwich and Woolwich - has been supporting the campaigners. He told News Shopper: "Ashwin Patel's death was a tragedy and my heart goes out to his family and friends.

"It's clear that we need further traffic-calming measures on Little Heath and Hillreach to prevent speeding, dangerous driving and resulting death and serious injury and that's why I'm backing the calls of local residents to make the road safer.

"The incredible amount of support that their campaign has already attracted is testament not only to the high regard in which Ashwin was held by the local community, but a clear signal of its determination that something like this never happens again."

A spokeswoman for Greenwich Council said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who lost his life in such tragic circumstances.

"After any such serious and shocking incident on our roads, we thoroughly examine the circumstances and the location to see what subsequent changes might be needed.

"We do this in conjunction with the police, who carry out a thorough investigation. This is still ongoing and we will then look into the findings of the investigation to determine what further action we should take.

"We are also working closely with the local community and are taking on board their views and comments about road safety at this location."
