THE Blacktip Shark Mystery opens a new series of Nature Shock, which explores extraordinary discoveries from within the animal world.
One of the more intimidating species of shark, the blacktip grows up to a whopping 9ft in length, frequently tips the scales at more than 100kg and is among the fastest in the ocean.
They have been known to attack humans – and have even been responsible for a fatality – so encountering one is a terrifying ordeal.
Therefore it takes a brave soul to take a dip at Aliwal Shoal, off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, these days because 60 of them inexplicably arrived there in 2006, and have remained ever since.
As the blacktip is usually migratory, this mystery has intrigued members of the scientific community – making it the perfect subject for the documentary strand. It follows dive-boat operator Mark Addison as he sets out to study the invading sharks.
