Letter to the editor: We read with regret the front page (Being A Labour Councillor Is Bad For Your Health, News Shopper, March 20) and the publication of an email from Councillor Alex Grant to his party members concerning his decision to stand down as a Labour candidate.

We recognise Cllr Grant is a hard-working councillor and represents his constituents well.

However, we regret Cllr Grant’s decision to broadcast his problems in a manner which does him little credit.

He has unfortunately become increasingly semi-detached from our group, rarely if ever now attending our meetings.

Ironically, one of the last meetings he attended in November was to consider the Mayor of London’s recent consultation on river crossings.

This is one example which Cllr Grant quotes as a policy developed without discussion.

In fact, he attended this meeting and voted to support the river crossing proposals.

Moreover, these crossings were in the council’s development plan throughout his period as chair of the council’s planning committee.

We hope by retiring as a Labour councillor he can find the peace with his family which he is seeking.
