Guests at the lavish banquet hosted by the Queen in honour of Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono dined on halal meat and alcohol-free food in respect of the evening's Muslim guests.

The menu of British fare featured a filet of Scottish halibut as its starter.

Cotswold free range chicken served with baby artichokes and fondant potatoes made up the main course, with guests then being presented with iced green apple and mulberry parfait, the latter fruit coming from the Buckingham Palace garden.

A selection of French wines were also served.

The meal, held in the ballroom at the Palace, was served on gilt plates dating from 1805 that were commissioned by George III.

The grand tables were adorned with elaborate candelabra and flowers in autumnal colours The 177 diners were entertained by a selection of musical pieces representing countries all over the world, including a Spanish march and a tango while a Beatles medley was also played by the musicians from the Welsh Guards.

During a private lunch earlier today, the Queen presented the president with a pair of photographs in silver frames and a leather-bound first edition copy of Winston Churchill's The World Crisis 1911-1918, given in a presentation box made by the royal bindery at Windsor Castle.

The first lady, Ani Bambang Yudhoyono, was presented with a pair of china candlesticks and a porcelain flower.

In return, the president presented the Queen with a painting entitled Mother Of Beauty by an artist called Ida Bagus Indra.

The president has also been granted an honorary knighthood, which is traditionally awarded to foreign heads of state on state visits.
