A word of warning: this is a proper film about real people, displaying real emotions in believable situations.
Don’t expect synthetic sentiments and typically massalla resolutions to life’s problems.
Director Deepa Mehta (Water, The Republic of Love, Fire, Camilla) examines arranged marriages and cultural and generational divides – not through extravagant song and dance numbers but through the realm of the imagination.
The story is set in Canada’s Punjabi community and stars Preity Zinta, playing a young woman who travels from India to Toronto for an arranged marriage to an immature young man, whose reaction to this unwanted wife is physical violence – until she discovers a magic potion.
