Chairman hails Canaries heroes

Preston's Canaries are the UK Asian Community Cup champions after a thrilling night in Stamford Bridge.

In a pulsating game Canaries came from behind to beat Birmingham's FC Smethwick in the final held at the home of Chelsea.

Chairman Zuber Bargit said, "We are immensely proud of the team for achieving this amazing feat. They did Preston proud."

The game was originally planned for Bank Holiday Monday but was cancelled at the last minute due to a waterlogged pitch and played 48 hours later. It meant some supporters missing the game altogether. Others made the journey twice to watch their team in action.

But the weather didn't dampen the Canaries' spirits as goals from Mohammed Ali, Zubair Mal and Khaser Ahmed fired them to a 3-1 victory.

The pick of the goals was a diving header by one of the smallest players on the pitch - Zubair Gatusso' Mal. Canaries are the first team from the North West to be crowned UK champions in this tournament.

Match Report.

Preston's Canaries were crowned UK Asian Community Cup champions in a game that was almost as unpredictable as the build-up.

Canaries started slowly as and let FC Smethwick to get the upper hand. But for all their possession Smethwick failed to create many clear openings. Satbinder Singh Taggar nearly gave FC Smethwick the lead from a stunning free-kick but keeper Dietz saved well.

Minutes later man-of-the-match Mo Ali made a good run before cutting inside and shooting just wide. This was followed by another Ali counter attack in which he drifted past two players before crossing to Daryl Noble who controlled the ball on his chest only for keeper Sandip Singh Dhesi to save.

With interval approaching Sean Williams gave Smethwick a deserved half-time lead.

If Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was looking for new man to motivate Chelsea he needn't have looked far. Canaries player-manager Abdul Rauf was absolutely livid with his team's performance. And his half-time team talk seemed to have done the trick.

Within minutes keeper Dhesi's clearance went straight to Canaries captain Zubair Mal who headed towards striker Ali. He held off a challenge by Sandip Singh and calmly slotted the ball home.

On 67 minutes Canaries were awarded a free-kick inside their half. Jav Mohammed sent a high ball towards Faz Khan, which broke nicely for Khaser Ahmed. He pulled the ball back for Junaid Kalang to deliver a pin-point cross to the advancing Zubair Mal, who scored with a diving header to the Prestonians' delight.

As Smethwick pressed for an equaliser the unlikeliest of fwlloes - Faz Khan - cleared off the goal line.

With less than five minutes left another Canaries counter-attack saw Khaser Ahmed round the keeper and put the game out of reach.

Chairman Zuber Bargit said: "I am delighted with the win and proud of everyone associated with the club. The victory was for the numerous supporters who made the long trip originally, only to be disappointed when the game was cancelled and had to be re-scheduled. I hope we can take this into the new season."

Well done canaries, but lets not get carried away, it is not really recognised as a offical tournament. U did well to get there, now put that effort into your domestic form. It took you this long to recognise that Mo Ali is your best player and showing him some respect. sorry truth hurts. ****

Listen u Geed! what r u talking about- a tournament in partnership with Chelsea FC - and the biggest within England and u say its not recognised and not official, come on get real- u r just **** off Canaries r UK CHAMPS - u not read the back of the Asian Image! OK, Brains - please name me just 1 recognised official tournament then within England. and b4 i go Mo Ali - he's not ur problem and i'm sure the mgmt recogise talent, i commend them the way they have nutured him over the years and respect - r u **** stirring between the 2 parties - and ur dead right the 'Truth Hurts' it surely does and the truth is 'Preston Csnaries R the UK Champions'- May long live the Legend - a true Preston Canaries loyal fan. OK legend, it not in patnership with chelsea, they dnt give a hoot who plays on the pitch cuz it is sum geezer who got a free allocation, just like any1 else. Yes i heard about all the dignetries and important people who wur there. The dinner after was superb and u only experience the stamnfordbridge changings rooms once, must have been great. not. so wat partnership u talking about....

Lets sort this debate out once and for all. Firstly Legend, were you at the final at Stamfordbridge? If so was there any dignortories from Chelesea FC there to meet your team and made sure everything was running to plan? Secondly, did you use the changing rooms that are used on match days?

Ok Geed and Phil - we r missing the point, Canaries r UK CHAMPS! its a footy match not a dignatory gathering, every team and most players disappear at Scotland SASA comp because they hate it, don't give a ****, we r footballers and therefore only interested in Football, and yes Chelsea back the comp like it or lump it.
Posted by: Phil Scolari, Chelsea on 12:02pm Sun 29 Jun 08
Firstly Legend after reading your last post we need to rename you as a "LEG-END". You need to wake up and smell the cofee because the only thing we can smell from you is "BULLS***". Secondly its about getting the hospitality from the club you not answered that so I gather thats a big fat NO.Did you use the changing rooms again a big fat NO. The question that comes into mind is which part of the comp do Chelsea back as the pitch was given through someone who has a contact through a sponsor I believe. And finally the Third point to "LEG-END" is when was the last time Canaries went to Glasgow to play in SASA Was it three years ago? Yes they did watch the final and went to the presentation dinner. The highlight of the final day was the canaries lads hired suits and bow ties(egged on). Therfore "LEG-END" the POINT is get your facts right first before you start backing Canaries and a crappy tournament which Chelsea dont give a monkeys about. Now like it yourself or lump it.

helloo- u r some jealous guy - what have u against Canaries - they only club in the North West to win a National Comp - so give credit where its due, SASA is one big scam - just lick arse and ur in and not on merit - just like **** Blackburn do and they go up nearly every year beacuse they love 2 lick, they're not even the best team in North -west - so shut up and stop talking load of rubbish - ur just cluching on straws.
Posted by: Phil Scolari, Chelsea on 12:24am Tue 1 Jul 08
Lets get this right "Leg-End" I dont have anything against Canaries the one the game and well done to them. You are compairing both tournaments. Did you attend the game at Stamfordbridge? Secondly, have you ever been to play in the SASA tournament or been to watch in Glasgow?
Posted by: Peacemaker, Preston on 11:08pm Tue 1 Jul 08
The simple point is that Canaries won and Phil Scolari you or whichever team you play for have won **** all. And don't say the standard is better in Glasgow because it isn't that much better. I have seen it. The quality of football is similar. And if the people at SASA had any sense they would invite the North West Champions to the tournament in Glasgow and no-one else.
Well done Canaries. Credit to the lads for winning the cup. Changing rooms? Who cares about changing rooms and dignitaries? Peace out

After reading your post i think you need to look up the meaning of the word PEACEMAKER. I wonder who you play for... duh!

Why does everyone hate Blackburn Utd and anyone associated with them - Its simple - U lot think u r it! Everyone else knows that u r bunch of wingers and just do ****-stirring - u have attitude and show it - u ain't getting anywhere in this world unless u lot change. Why do all other teams in the North west have respect and friendship with and for each other and get on with each other, shame about Bburn Utd who everyone find to be back-stabbers.

only one team should go glasgow from north west and that is the north west champions glasgow is a joke you cant take a tournament seriously that is not fair in who it invites so for me glasgow is just a scam

The fact is that Canaries finished bottom of the league last year and won the 'UK Asian Community Cup'.

Blackburn Utd qualified for SASA despite not winning the North West heat.

Get real you losers and stop playing in these 'asian' tournaments. Its pathetic and does nothing but antagonise people. Can you imagine and rightly so if there were white tournaments????

I would love to see how all the northwest teams would fare in our league. Cos I think its one of the strongest leagues around. Ask any1 with a bit of decent knowledge about amateur football. regarding tournament wins!! This is the thing with Asians just wana slag each other off at any given time. Its a disease among us Asians, no one like to see any 1 doing well. banta is good but this slagging off disease is a plague. All the best to all the northwest teams!

What league is that, Joker?

There are some good players out there. Shame the management of these clubs doesnt match up.
