Get set for Preston Mela
TRaditional South Asian singing, music and cuisine will be the order of the day this Sunday when Preston Mela comes to Avenham and Miller Parks.
The Mela, which takes place between 12noon and 9pm, is set to attract more than 10,000 people to the city.
There will be live performances from artists such as Tariq Khan, Serese and PR Dholi, food stalls selling South Asian delicacies, traditional crafts such as Henna painting and much more.
Now in its eleventh year, the Mela, which is organised by Preston Mela Trust and Preston City Council, is a major event on the summer festival calendar and aims to celebrate the heritage and culture of the city's South Asian community.
This year's Mela also marks the European Year of International Dialogue and commemorates the 60th anniversary of the NHS.
Mayor of Preston Councillor John Swindells said: "Preston Mela is a superb event attracting thousands of people from across the North West.
"There will be something for all the family, from superb food and colourful dancing displays, to live music and workshops where people can learn traditional South Asian crafts such as Henna painting and Rangoli.
"The Mela is a celebration of the city's diverse and vibrant culture and recognises the contribution the South Asian community makes to the city.
"It promises to be a day out not to be missed."
Gulab Singh MBE, Chairman of Preston Mela Trust, said: "The Mela is one of Preston's most high profile events.
"People who have attended in previous years have said it was a memorable day out on the park with plenty of activities for the whole family.
"We are grateful for the continued support of our sponsors and funders, who, through their contributions and commitment make this event a major focal point in the city's arts and cultural calendar."
Preston Mela takes place between 12 noon and 9pm on Sunday 15 June at Preston's Avenham and Miller Parks.
