The Ultimate Mela Guide: United Kingdom
Here's our pick of the bunch from melas taking place acros the UK.
Glasgow Mela.
Sunday, June 22, Kelvington Park.
This mela is picking up the pace and this year has a bigger line-up than ever. If you don't like the result don't go and trash the place. We are not the vengeful type.

Southampton Mela.
Saturday, July 19, Hoglands Park.
Where there are fewer apnays the melas are usually better. This one takes place in the town centre. Brilliant. It is an eight hour drive away though.
Middlesbrough Mela.
Saturday and Sunday, July 19 & 20.
We have no idea why we love this mela so much. Maybe it is because they give you what it says on the tin. No cheap thrills just pure excitement. Pakistani, Hindu, Bengali, Sikh...Teesider they cater for the lot. www.boromela.co.uk
Birmingham Eid Mela
Sunday, July 27.
The city's largest ever Mela'. Well that's what they said last year. It was OK I suppose. Featuring music, sports (including kabaddi), dressage and a family fun run, bazaars, fashion shows and radio roadshows.

London Mela
Sunday, August 10, Gunnersbury Park Pope's Lane.
The capital city has been putting on a show for years and let's see if the new Mayor Boris Johnson can continue the great work of our Ken. It gets very busy very quickly. But if you get bored you can always go to see the sights.

Newcastle Mela.
Sunday & Monday, August 24 & 25, Exhibition Park.
First held in 1993 the Newcastle Mela is a little treasure. They had a decent crowd last year and a good mix of people. Not your average mela this one and packs a little punch.

The Edinburgh Mela Festival
Monday to Sunday, August 25 to 31.
Wow that's a whole week but the mela only takes place in the last two days. A carnival atmosphere with a vibrant and exciting mix of theatre, dance and music.
Forget going to Pakistan for your holidays this year...just take your mum and everyone else you know here instead. You won't lose your bags, you won't get a stomach upset and best of all you are unlikely to meet any of your relatives...well if you are lucky.
