Discussion on situation in Pakistan
A public meeting to discuss the current situation in Pakistan is being held in Manchester on February 16.
The event, hosted by the Manchester branch of the National Union of Journalists, will cover civil liberties, press freedom and trade union rights in Pakistan.
Amjad Malik, a Manchester-based solicitor and journalist who weill be speaking at the event, said: "The Chief Justice of Pakistan is still under house arrest, as are his colleagues; the Supreme Court Bar President is incarcerated; one former Prime Minister is dead and another in waiting fears for his life.
"The media is gagged. The constitutional avenue is blocked for the public. People are fighting on the streets for proper flour."
Other speakers include Javed Khan, journalist and president of the Pakistan Press Club in Manchester. and exiled Pakistani journalist Mansoor Hassan.
There will also be clips and soundbites from activists in Pakistan, plus time for debate.
The event is at the Friends Meeting House on Mount Street, behind the Central Library, from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday February 16. For more information, call 07792 923069.
