Liberty director to discuss law and terror
 |
| Shami Chakrabarti |
Shami Chakrabarti, director of human rights group Liberty, will be speaking about 'the law and terror' at the official opening of University of Salford's Law School on Friday.
A barrister by background, Shami will be launching the £10m School which attracted almost 100 budding lawyers when it opened its doors in September - exceeding its targets for the first academic year.
In her speech, Shami is expected to highlight the importance of the post-war human rights framework as an essential component of democratic society.
Having worked as a Home Office lawyer, she is a critic of what she has described as the Government's constant erosion of personal freedoms.
She will also officially open the School's purpose-built Lady Hale Building, named after Lady Brenda Hale, the UK's first and only female law lord.
Lady Hale will join Shami and guests in celebrating the official opening of the new building which features a state-of-the-art law library.
Head of Salford Law School, Professor Alistair Alcock said: "Shami is a noted authority on civil liberties and human rights issues and we are delighted to welcome her to the University.
"It will be fascinating to hear her views on these topical and thought-provoking issues."
