A community health fair with free health checks is to take place this Saturday in Bolton.

The event from 11am to 4pm will be held at the Chancellor’s Mall and Social Learning Centre on University Way, off Deane Road.

Tony Lloyd, interim Mayor, Greater Manchester is to open the event The Health Mela Is organised by a partnership including the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing (NFHW), the University of Bolton and the Rotary Clubs of Bolton.

Visitors will find a stalls with experts able to provide up to date health related information and advice.

They can watch the dancers, see the results of the entries to health related competitions submitted by local primary schools or perhaps try out a taster session in complementary medicine for example Reiki.

Of very real significance for many visitors is the opportunity to take a comprehensive ‘Health MOT’ which includes personally tailored advice from health professionals.

Tests on offer in a friendly relaxed atmosphere include blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and BMI, together with hearing, dental and eye checks.

Dr. Wirin Bhatiani, Chair of Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group said, “All partners have a key role in delivering better outcomes for our patients and the public. We need to engage with our public to get them fully involved in taking charge of their Health and Wellbeing”.

Dr. Stephen Hodgson, Medical Director of the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust added, “Bolton Foundation Trust is delighted to support the Bolton Health Mela. (It) aligns perfectly with our goal of improving health by education and early identification of disease. Our 5,200 staff all have a role to play in encouraging healthy lifestyles”.

Professor Romesh Gupta, OBE, Director of the Centre for Research in Health and Wellbeing at the University of Bolton and Chair of NFHW said, “It’s good to see NFHW and the University playing a key role as catalyst in promoting collaboration amongst health professionals, voluntary bodies and the community in the promotion of health and wellbeing in Bolton.”
