London-based artist Chila Kumari Burman will be exhibiting her recent works at Embrace Arts, the University of Leicester’s arts centre.

The exhibition will be part of the celebration of the 130th anniversary of Leicester Society of Artists, alongside a talk with the artist as keynote speaker.

Inspired by popular culture, Bollywood, fashion, found objects, and femininity, Chila Kumari Burman’s work has been exhibited and is part of art collections around the world. Burman has been experimenting across a variety of media including print, collage, sculpture, photography and mixed media, for over 25 years.

Born in Liverpool to a Hindu-Punjabi family, Burman’s work draws upon her personal and family memories. She creates powerful images of contemporary Asian feminism, exploring issues of class, gender, sexual and race subjectivities throughout her art, challenging stereotypes of Asian women.

Philip Redford, exhibition organiser at the Leicester Society of Artists said: “Leicester is estimated to become the first European City whose inhabitants are predominantly non-European in origin. We wanted to reflect this development in Leicester Society of Artists 130th anniversary’s annual lecture. Chila has forged an impressive career in London and abroad. I am delighted at the prospect of seeing a selection of Chila's vibrant and invigorating work at Embrace Arts in Leicester.”

Collage, botanical works and self-portraits will be displayed as part of the exhibition: My Rangila Merry-go-around. Rangila, means colourful in English, highly reflected in Burman’s work. With an autobiographical focus partly reflected on Burman’s self-portraits, the artist uses technology to manipulate media and reinvent herself, playing around with the concept of selfies.

My Rangila Merry-go-around exhibition by Chila Kumari Burman will take place at Embrace Arts, Richard Attenborough Centre from Thursday 12 February until Sunday 29 March.

The exhibition is FREE, open for visitors Monday to Friday between 9.15am and 6pm and some weekends (please contact Embrace Arts to check beforehand). The Artist Talk, organised in collaboration with Leicester Society of Artists, will take place on Friday 20 February at 7pm, tickets cost £7.

Please go to www.embracearts.co.uk or call 0116 252 2455 to book tickets. There will be a reception with refreshments alongside the talk from 6pm to 9pm.
