Manchester will host its annual Chand Raat event on Sunday.

The celebration and shopping event has been taking place Longsight Market since 2002 and has grown to become Europe’s biggest Chand Raat celebration.

Literally translated from Hindi and Urdu as the Night of the Moon, Chand Raat is held to mark the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid-ul Fitr, the last day of the fasting period of Ramadan.

From 9pm visitors to the market will be treated to an array of live entertainment, set to include music, dancing and a variety of performing artists.

Festivities will include a colourful night market selling traditional Asian goods and gifts, a funfair, henna painting and a mouth-watering range of Asian food.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council executive member for culture and leisure, said: “Chand Raat in Longsight has continued to grow in stature and popularity - I’ve no doubt that this year’s night market will be the best yet.

“This is a true celebration that creates a vibrant, colourful and family friendly atmosphere making Longsight the perfect place to mark Chand Raat in style.”

Longsight Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Dave Nutsey said: “The Chand Raat event at Longsight market has been taking place now for the last 12 years and has gone from strength to strength.

“It is a perfect occasion for all of the family and it’s always wonderful to see our communities coming together and enjoying the atmosphere.”

Celebrations will take place at Longsight Market, on the corner of St John’s and Dickenson Road, from 11am-1pm on Sunday 27 July.
