A wide-ranging exploration of the world’s largest democracy, what motivates its citizens to vote, what democracy means to them and the issues of the Indian election.

Mukulika Banerjee is Associate Professor of Anthropology, and Director of the South Asia Centre at LSE. In 2009, she presented a documentary on BBC Radio 4 entitled ‘Sacred Election: Lessons from the world’s biggest democracy’ based on her study of the national elections in India.  S

She is the author of The Sari (co-authored with Daniel Miller), The Pathan Unarmed – Opposition and Memory in the North West Frontier Province and her latest book, Why India Votes.

Patrick French is the author of Younghusband, Liberty or Death, Tibet, Tibet and The World Is What It Is. His books have won the Somerset Maugham Award, the Royal Society of Literature W.H. Heinemann Prize, the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Hawthornden Prize. His most recent book is India – A Portrait.

Meghnad Desai studied in Bombay for his BA and MA and in the US for his Ph. D. He taught at LSE between 1965 and 2003. He is the author of over twenty-five books including Marx’s Revenge: The Resurgence of Capitalism and the Death of Statist Socialism, Development and Nationhood and The Rediscovery of India. He is a member of the House of Lords and an Emeritus Professor of Economics at LSE.

They will be speaking with Salil Tripathi, Former Trustee of English PEN. Based in London, he is a contributing editor at Mint and Caravan in India, was formerly a correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review in Singapore and was a senior visiting fellow at Kennedy School, Harvard University.
