This is Doctor Who but not as we have seen it before.

British actor Rahul Kohli has been cast alongside Alex Zur in a new Doctor Who prequel which tells of the story of the Doctor and his arch nemesis the Master before they went on their divergent life paths.

In ‘A Wild Endeavour’ the audience is left guessing as to the identity of the Doctor and the Master.

The show is named after a continent on the planet Gallifrey and the location of the Time Lord Capitol and will also feature Gabrielle Dempsey as the companion.

Speaking to Asian Image this week Rahul said he was excited about the role, “My dad was a big Doctor Who fan so obviously I grew up with it as many people did. I was always a Star Wars fan!”.

“But I have been very busy learning about it – as it does have a vast history.

“Even though this is prequel in terms of the dialogue it looked a lot more modern so I have been looking at some of the most recent series.

“Because it is a prequel you do have a little bit of a blank canvas and you are not mimicking anything.”

Creator Robert Doyle says his team was careful to ensure that they didn’t contradict storylines.

A keen Doctor Who fan he is well aware of the varied history and the background to the show which has a worldwide audience of people of all ages.

He said, “In addition to the TV show there are a whole series of novels. So we had to be careful that we stayed to true to the legend of Doctor Who.

“The mystery of the Doctor is a core element of the show and for fans this is very important. We are not giving away too much.”

He revealed how the story focuses on much on the Master as it does on the Doctor, “In their youth both the Doctor and the Master were very much aware of the corruption that had enveloped their government. The Master was more of a moral conscious at the time.

“The question we also look to answer is how does the Master descend into the megalomaniac we are more familiar with?.”

Robert said they had positive feedback from many fans.

“Everything so far has been quite positive and Doctor Who fans as you know are very passionate.”

Meanwhile, Rahul was caught out by the passion of the ‘Whovians’.

“My first error was I spelt Dalek wrong on Twitter! Within minutes someone had pointed it out but the fans I have to say have been awesome.

“I have had many people give me positive messages about the show.”

Robert explained their choice of lead characters, “We looked at a mass of auditions and in the end ethnicity doesn’t matter.

“We knew we had found our actor and we were not about to drop someone who played the character better than anyone else we'd seen simply because he was not white.

“We want the viewers to be attached to the characters so when Doctor loses his friend - the audience feels they are losing a friend too.”

Rahul did feel a little surprised when he learnt of what he was auditioning for, “When I first started out I didn’t who I was reading for. It only dawned on me later there was a 50/50 chance there could be an Asian Doctor Who?

“But I think this is quite a unique role for me.

“In the past I would maybe get cast because there was reason for me to be cast in that role. For instant the storyline meant there was a need for a particular character.”

“Granted, some of the shows have not been like that.”

“It is very interesting situation to be in to not know the identity of your character.”

A pilot show for ‘A Wild Endeavor will go into production later this summer.
