Actor Amit Sadh has admitted he went to jail for trying to help a very close friend to elope with the latter’s girlfriend.

He recently revealed the incident and its uncanny resemblance to his reel life role in the soon to be released movie Running Shaadi.

The actor explained how a friend of his was in love with a girl who lived in their neighborhood in Mumbai.

One day the couple decided to elope and get married since the girl’s parents vehemently opposed to their relationship.

Amit shared how he volunteered to help them elope, little knowing that doing so would land all of them in all sorts of trouble.

Amit laughed on how close he was to being jailed for attempting to be a good Samaritan. “It was funny now when I look back and think but when we got caught, we were scared to death.

"I was only helping a dear friend who genuinely loved his girlfriend and wanted to be making sure he could spend his married life with her.

"But much like a dramatic film, we were caught and the father didn’t take it too well, almost landing my friend and me in jail. But after a lot of talking and counselling matters got resolved. Though I’m glad I helped them, they’re still together, intact and very happy!” All is well that ends well.

Taapsee Pannu, who plays Nimmi, the female lead.

Taapsee Pannu said, "I think for Amit Roy, he wanted me to play the role because the character is almost me on screen. The character is so like me, it was almost like I wasn’t even acting."

She says that although she didn’t have to step too far outside her comfort zone to play Nimmi, she learnt a lot from the experience.

"The characters in the film are very real. That’s where the humour comes from – not from funny lines, but from these very real characters that everyone can identify with."

Pannu concedes that the issues it addresses are a serious matter for many people. "Arranged marriage is an issue that affects a lot of people in this country."

"It sometimes seems like couples have to think about everything except their own feelings when they get married.

"They have to think about their religion, their caste, their family, society – and the last question seems to be ‘do you actually want to marry this person?

"It’s funny that no one has come up with the idea of exploiting that market before now," she says. "We have loads of marriage websites, but ones like this, that are really for people who are in love, we don’t seem to have had yet.”

"It was great to come up with this concept in the film and build a beautiful love story around it."
