The Last Bit...the book

It became a cult favourite almost overnight, now the popular Last Bit columns have been published as a book.

The Last Bit column first appeared in the February 1998 edition of the Asian Image newspaper.

Ever since it was penned it has continued to draw attention and became a popular section in the newspaper.

The first column entitled, ‘Ten things I hate about Eid’ received several complaints including some from angry members of the public who decided it was wrong to state in any way that shoes were stolen from mosques - even if on occasions they were.

From being the 'Token Asian' to describing a simple trip to the airport the Last Bit leaves no stone unturned in its quest to tell you what British Asian life is really like.

This book contains all the columns - including One Hundred And Twenty Minutes, I Love my Shalwar Kameez and The Translator to others that saw calls for it to be banned from the pages of the newspaper. It also features translations of Punjabi / Gujrati words used in the columns.

It includes an introduction by Shuiab Khan Editor of Asian Image. He said, “What I noticed from the very beginning was how we always have a joke to tell. Asian culture, whatever your religion, is based on a good laugh and wonderful funny stories.

“And put some Lancastrian humour into the equation and life really does look rosy from whatever angle you look at it.

“It was never the intention to offend people in any way but sometimes people did not see or get the joke and an explanation was needed.”

The column developed a cult following amongst students early on but also became part of the staple diet for older members of the community too.
