This wonderful rule has lasted us in good stead all these years.
The rule is not really a religious one as such but more of ‘traditional one’. And I for one love it. I have no intention of mixing it with the females and I can’t see what I would say if I did.
I go to someone’s house I want to be directed to the front room. That last bastion of a by-gone age when we all knew our rightful place.
It remains an unwritten rule which is being butchered my dear friends. There are those among us who wish to have us sitting in one room. How dare they? I have been to homes where they only have one room downstairs - I don’t know what to do. ‘You want me to sit here?’ - ‘Are you sure?’ I sometimes wait in the hallway until ‘they’ leave the room. When they don’t I really am at a loss? When I was a child this rule was fantastic. From one room to the next I wandered without a care in the world.
There is nothing finer than sitting in someone’s spotless front room adorned with velvet cushions and hearing a knock at the door. Oh, wonderful, tea’s ready!
No, this is not sexist. Far from it. Believe it or not it was a woman who invented this rule in the first place. Back in fifties the first Asian set up home in the UK and realised he had no mates.
Then one day some people arrived. Now, the lady of the house couldn’t let them come into the living room because they might see the mess so into the ‘special room’ they went.
As times changed that special room lost its uniqueness.
People don’t care about this rule anymore. It’s a free for all in some homes. They wander in and out without a second thought. It’s called ‘development’.
Once, I sat in the special room and ‘she’ came in too. ‘Look lady I’m all for equal rights and all that but isn’t there something you should be brewing!’ Another time I accidently wandered into the living room. The shame was unbearable. They all looked at me as if I was some sort of pervert.
I know we have all got a little richer. We have better motors parked outside. Some of us have got our kids in ‘grammar’ schools. We have bigger houses with laminate flooring and plasma TV’s.
But please make sure this rule remains in our hearts and souls forever. It is, after all, the only thing some of us TRUE brothers have left.
