As part of the ‘Future Media’ team embedded within BBC Audio and Music (the people that bring you the BBC’s national speech and music radio stations, including Radios 1,2,3,4, Five Live, and 6music), you’ll help build innovative, interactive websites and content production systems. Working on large and small scale projects both on your own and as part of the wider team, you’ll be responsible for advising on the required resources and timescales associated with project work, as well as writing code using (x)HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, XSSI, XSLT/XML or other client side technology.

To do this, you’ll need an excellent knowledge of XHTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, XML/XSLT and XSSI, plus a high level of demonstrable ability in PHP and Zend Framework. A thorough working knowledge of MVC design patterns and experience using client side Javascript frameworks (such as Prototype, Script.aculo.us, and JQuery) will also be important. In addition, a familiarity with apache-based servers and a very strong understanding of W3C standards, browser compatibility issues, usability and accessibility best practices will be crucial.

Information Architect, Future Media and Technology for Audio & Music Interactive         Ref. 974608

Innovating on the web and other platforms, the Future Media and Technology team run existing services like bbc.co.uk/programmes and iPlayer for Radio, and work tirelessly on shipping new product ideas. As part of the team, you’ll take responsibility for the definition, evolution and implementation of robust and highly usable information structures for software and information products currently under development in Audio & Music Interactive. More specifically, this will involve you developing domain models to categorise and structure information while gathering and realising user requirements for given products.

This role demands someone with a good level of experience of Domain Driven Design. In addition, you’ll need a real understanding of full stack web applications (from database to markup), as well as knowledge of HTTP and RESTful architectures. And, as an effective communicator with the ability to present clear and focused ideas and concepts to a diverse audience, you’ll be comfortable working in an agile environment with multi-disciplinary teams.

It’s the job of our Audio & Music Interactive department to take radio/music brands and content into the digital environment. These high profile brands include everything from Radio 1 to Five Live and from 1Xtra to The Proms. Whether it’s DAB digital radio, the internet or mobile devices, this team uses the strengths of each specific platform to showcase the brands and content as effectively as possible.

Acting as a Project Manager in this setting, you’ll help us to plan, track and report on the progress of Technology and Design projects. As part of your role, you’ll communicate the status of these projects to all the stakeholders involved and to liaise with our external suppliers.

Clearly you’ll need experience of project management within a high pressure environment, the ability to use project management tools such as Microsoft Project and an understanding of the digital arena. You should have a working knowledge of internet technologies and infrastructure as well as experience of overseeing client side developers, software engineers and designers. Ideally, you’ll also have an appreciation of technologies including HTML, JavaScript, Flash, ActionScript, Perl, Python, Java, XSLT, SQL, SOAP and REST based Web Services.

As a creatively-minded Software Engineer with a strong analytical brain and a passion for music and radio, you’ll be in your element in our Technology and Design team. We run innovative new services such as iPlayer for Radio and introduce new ideas across a range of digital platform. You’ll play your part by building our sites and content production systems, as well as advising the team on system development issues.

The focus of the role will be on writing code for projects of every size using Ruby on Rails, Java, mod_perl, PHP, Python and other technologies. This will involve working closely with Technical Project Managers, the production team and designers. As a result, you’ll need to combine strong technical skills with an eye for detail, a calm approach and well-developed organisational ability.

Technically, you’ll need in-depth knowledge of MVC design platforms, experience using server side frameworks and apache-based servers, plus exposure to project tools such as Agile. Add knowledge of version control and experience of client side technologies to this and you’ll be close to our perfect profile.
