A Bradford councillor disqualified as a company director for seven years after his company went into liquidation has been suspended by the Labour Party.

The suspension of 42-year-old Heaton councillor Imdad Hussain was announced late last night by Labour officials but they refused to say when it had happened.

All they would reveal was that an internal investigation linked to Coun Hussain’s business dealing had been “underway for some time”.

The announcement came after Bradford West MP George Galloway called for the banned company director to be suspended from Labour.

The MP said in yesterday’s Telegraph & Argus that Council leader Ian Greenwood should also go because he had taken no action against Coun Hussain since the disqualification order was made in February last year.

Coun Hussain, of Bingley Road, Bradford, ran Claimwise Legal Services Ltd, registered at Commercial House, 140-148 Manningham Lane, Bradford.

An order disqualified him as a company director for seven years from March 3, 2011.

A Labour Party spokesman said: “We are aware that allegations have been made against Imdad Hussain. An internal party investigation has been underway for some time and he has been suspended.”

Coun Greenwood said he welcomed the Labour Party investigation into these matters but added: “It would be inappropriate in these circumstances to comment further at this time.”
