Man, 104, is oldest to be given British citizenship

A 104-year-old has proved that you’re never too old to become a new man.

Taufeek Khanjar is thought to have become the oldest person to be declared a British citizen when he took part in a citizenship ceremony in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey.

Mr Khanjar, who is originally from Iraq, said he was “very happy” with his new status, having moved to the UK to live with his daughter in South Cheam, Surrey, six years ago.

The former jewellery maker, who is a widower and has six children, said the secret of his long life was to never lose his temper.

Mr Khanjar, who took an oath to the Queen at the ceremony at Surrey County Council’s headquarters yesterday, said: “I take it in my stride. If the world capsized I still wouldn’t strain myself.

”I keep busy by watching television, playing cards, reading and listening to music. I also like to repair watches and other broken items.”

The council’s cabinet member for community services Denise Saliagopoulos said: “Mr Khanjar was immensely proud to become a British citizen. Everyone was delighted to play a part in making his dream come true.”
