Israeli products boycott goes nationwide

A nationwide boycott of Israeli goods has been launched across Scotland as activists target Muslim-owned shops in an attempt to stop them selling produce from the Jewish state.

The boycott, which started in the south side of Glasgow last weekend, was deemed so successful that campaigners decided to expand it. Campaigners from the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) are now targeting shops run by Muslims in the rest of Glasgow and in Fife, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee.

In Glasgow, the protesters asked shop owners to take Israeli goods off their shelves and warned they would “name and shame” any store that did not do so. The SPSC says every shop it approached on the south side of the city backed the boycott.

The pressure we bring to bear is moral. We use the threat of publicity. There is no threat of strong-arming. Mick Napier, chairman, SPSC Mick Napier, chairman of the SPSC, oversaw a “clean sweep” of all Muslim-owned shops near the Nicholson Street mosque in Edinburgh on Friday. About 40 protesters went door to door, asking store owners to support the campaign.

“All the shops we visited backed the boycott and are now displaying posters to that effect,” he said. “The support we received from customers and passers-by was overwhelming.”

He added: “It’s been 100% successful. We often met with a response immediately, with people saying they would not dream of stocking Israeli goods.

“The pressure we bring to bear is moral. We use the threat of publicity. There is no threat of strong-arming.

“The reality is that Israel makes it impossible for Palestinian farmers to export almost anything. Palestinians were kicked off their land to make way for the illegal settlements, but the good news is that the boycott is kicking back. It’s great to see small shops in Scotland standing up for human rights.”

Napier also added that every shop visited in Dundee backed the boycott. Shopkeepers backing the boycott have put up a poster in their stores saying: “This shop supports the Palestinians. No Israeli produce sold here.”

Khalid Bashir, owner of the Red Sea Food Store in Nicholson Square, Edinburgh, is already boycotting Israeli goods and has agreed to display a poster. He said: “People ask about it all the time, but I am able to tell them I have been boycotting Israel for years. It should be easier now that I can display this poster.”

In Dundee, protesters targeted shops in the city centre. In Kirkcaldy, the three largest Muslim-owned shops all agreed to take part in the boycott. Shops in Glasgow’s West End are taking part; in Aberdeen, campaigners are preparing to talk to shops in the coming days.

Dianna Wolfson, a prominent member of Glasgow’s Jewish community and a former convener of the Interfaith Council, which promotes dialogue between religions, warned that boycotts could derail the relations between communities.

She said: “There are people on both sides who would like to see peaceful settlements. This boycotting is not helpful. More needs to be done to explore how we can have peace with each other, rather than emphasising the warring aspect and divisive aspect of it.”

She added: “If people of different faiths were getting to know each other, they would be more likely to listen and hear the other side of the argument … to emphasis what is good on both sides, and come together.”

Wolfson said she would not consider boycotting goods from a country “that didn’t like Israel. It’s just not my thinking and I find it hurtful.”

It was very pleasing to read about the many principled and caring business owners in Scotland who have taken a stand against Israeli terrorism.
They join the countless other individuals, institutions and businesses around the world who also boycott Israeli goods and services because they too, are appalled at Israel's brutality, lies, distortion of the facts, and theft of their neighbour's lands and property.
I urge all good people to support this boycott by giving their business to these shops, and by writing to the Israeli embassy demanding an end to Israeli brutality, the return of all occupied lands and an end to the slaughter of innocent civilians.

In the discussion that followed a related report to this last week, 'twisted' told many false tales. These included a blood libel against the Jews and another libel about the Israelis desecrating Christian and Moslem holy sites. Spoken openly under his or her name and address, attitudes such as these could lead to prosecutions under the provisions of the UK's Race Relations Act.
It is not surprising that Muslim shopkeepers might want to show their sympathies for fellow Muslims in difficult circumstances. They might well therefore reasonably have a collection box on their counter for people affected by conflicts in the Middle East, including - say - Gaza, as well as for the victims of the floods in Pakistan. Even Muslim shopkeepers not stocking Israeli labelled goods is unsurprising.

What is borderline racist is putting signs in shop windows saying "No Israeli Produce Sold Here". How about if Hindu Asian shopkeepers had signs saying "No Pakistani produce sold here". Would that not been taken as extremely offensive and inflammatory?

So just think how much it might hurt before you poke someone else in the eye. And how little-to-no good it would actually do for anyone.

m - and see for themselves who between us is the liar. I would also urge all readers to search the media where they will find plenty of evidence of Israeli terrorism, brutality, lies and deceit.
More and more people are waking up to the distortions, lies and black propaganda that emanates from Israel and it's supporters. Such is the disgust felt at Israeli terrorism that people around the world - from South Africa to Sweden, from Singapore to Brazil have taken the decision to boycott Israeli goods and services as a way of showing their contempt for Israeli policies and actions.
This is a country which has no regard for international laws, the rights of the people whose lands it continues to illegally occupy or for the lives and property of those people.
Recently a pastor in America announced plans to burn the Quran. His plans were denounced by almost everybody in America and he was forced to back down. Not so in Israel. Here orthodox Jews are allowed to burn the Bible. - http://www.haaretz.c

m - and see for themselves who between us is the liar".

And now "twisted" comes up with another little bit of his hate-mail. He suggests above, from an article that he has "found" in Ha'aretz (an Israeli daily newspaper that would be surprising reading matter for any of us), that Jews burn the Christian Bible. So then we have to look up his reference and find that a particular bunch of religious Jews at a seminary (similar to a Madrassa) in Israel objected by book burning because some Fringe Cult missionaries (self-styled "Jews for Jesus") - i.e. bent on getting converts - were handing out booklets to Jews that included the "New Testament".

I happen to know a bit about the "Jews for Jesus" people and they are not exactly Christians anyway - they call their places of worship Synagogues, their leaders are "Rabbis" they wear prayer shawls with covered heads when praying and their Sabbaths are on Saturdays, not Sundays.

This is a typical example of how "twisted" thinks that he can argue. From a particular incident (where no one was even hurt or anyone in a mainstream religion was even mildly offended) with some particular people, in a particular time, in a particular place, he thinks that it's OK to libel the whole Jewish tribe.
Furthermore, I don't even think that real Christians have a particular hang-up about the fate of their physical bibles. To Christians (I think) they are virtually textbooks that can be burnt or destroyed like any other book - unlike the Koran to Muslims or a hand-written Torah scrolls on parchment to the Jews, which are treated as physically important Holy Books.

"Jews for Jesus" are a Fringe group, like Moonies or Scientologists, who bother you in the High Street seeking converts - and so their salespeople expect to be told to ‘get lost’ by those that already have a faith, or none.

As I have said before, putting signs in shop windows saying "No Israeli Produce Sold Here" is 'borderline racist' towards Jews. In his writings on this website, "twisted" has shown himself to be completely malevolent and racist.

"twisted", in his own blind hatred, has shown his ignorance of the "Jews for Jesus" evangalists - he should look at their own propaganda film on Youtube to decide if they are Christians:

This week will see the anniversary of the Sabra-Shatilla massacre, when gunmen supplied, supported and encouraged by the Israeli army rounded up and murdered all the women, children and elderly inhabitants of entire villages. Several thousand more reasons to boycott Israel.

On March 28, 1991 Lebanon's Parliament retroactively exempted the 1982 Sabra-Shatila killers from criminal responsibility. The victims and their families of the Sabra-Shatila massacre as well as virtually all human rights organizations including but not limited to Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Humanitarian Law Project, strenuously oppose blanket amnesty for the killers. They argue that the 1991 violates Lebanon's constitution, as well as international law and promotes impunity for heinous crimes.
