Saj is raring to go for Lancs

Sajid Mahmood says a winter of match practice will help him be ready for the start of the new county season next month.

Lancashire’s bowling spearhead has toured South Africa and the United Arab Emirates with the full England one-day squad and then the England Lions.

And, while he only took a total of 19 wickets in 15 limited overs matches, he believes the time spent in the middle will serve him better than had he been bowling at his Red Rose colleagues in the Old Trafford Indoor School.

“I think it’s a massive advantage because you get to play in games and show your skills in match situations and under match pressures, whereas you don’t get that in training,” said the ex-Astley Bridge and Egerton man.

“To be able to do that in the winter, when other players have been indoors, has been fantastic. There is nothing better than playing in an actual game.”

Mahmood, 28, with Lancashire in Barbados for their pre-season tour, said he is confident that the Red Rose can have a successful summer.

He added: “There’s been a lot of talk about us not winning a trophy, but with the experience and talent in our dressing room I don’t think there’s any doubt that we should be winning trophies. “Hopefully we can do that.

“Obviously that is our main goal, but you’ve obviously got to do certain things right to get to that. It’s pretty simple, you’ve got to win games.”

Mahmood will pair up with new team-mate Daren Powell, the former West Indies quick bowler, whilst in the Caribbean.

Mahmood added: “He bowls quite quick, and he’s quite aggressive. Hopefully the partnership can work pretty well.”
