A University of Salford lecturer has won an award at The Muslim News Awards for Excellence.
Dr Haifa Takruri-Rizk MBE beat stiff competition to win the Fazlur Rahman Khan Award for Excellence in Engineering, Science or Technology at yesterday’s event in London’s Grosvenor House.
The Ministry of Defence sponsored award is the latest recognition of the 18 years Dr Takruri-Rizk has spent at the University of Salford researching and promoting science, engineering and technology to women and black and minority ethnic (BME) people.
Dr Takruri-Rizk has led various national and regional projects researching the lack of progress made by women and BME people to address the issues preventing them from succeeding in science, engineering and technology.
During her career she has pioneered a highly successful national initiative to encourage thousands of girls to study and choose science and engineering as a career.
The award is not the first time Dr Takruri-Rizk’s contribution has been recognised – last year she was awarded an MBE for her work inspiring women and BME people to take careers in science and engineering.
Dr Takruri-Rizk said: “"As a BME female engineer it’s a great honour to receive this award in recognition of my contribution to British society.
“I don't do what I do to receive awards but to be recognised in this way makes the hard work worthwhile!"
