I'm 19 and just a big failure

Dear Masi, I’m nearly 19 years old and I just dont feel right.

Nobody cares about me, I’m single, I’ve got no job which means I’ve got no money and I’m in college Even at college I don’t even know why I’’m there or even doing that course I’m just so confused and at times I feel like killing myself because right now I’m thinking to myself - life aint worth living and I’ve got nothing. I’m just a big failure!

Please help.

Massi Says, Do not despair and do not do anything silly! You have everything to live for, and you are not a failure.

It seems that you are going through a low period at the moment and cannot see any positives in your life. I am sure there are lots of positives, you are young, healthy and have the rest of your life ahead of you to do whatever you want.

Why are you so desperate to be certain about everything, you are only 19! Enjoy life, go out with friends, and spend time with your family.

So what if you’re not in a relationship, it’s not the be all and end all of everything. You have tons of stuff to look forward to in life and a relationship is one of them, it will happen at the right time.

You say that you are confused about being in college and are not sure why you are there; perhaps the course you are studying is not the right one for you.

You wouldn’t be the first person to be on the wrong course, have a word with your tutor or the course leader they may be able to give you advice on an alternative course that may suit you better.

Perhaps take a break from studying and think about doing some travelling?

In terms of a job, hopefully once you have finished with college you will be better qualified to find the right job for you. So hang on in there, things will get better.

If you continue to feel low then I would definitely consider going to see your GP to discuss ways to deal with your current low moods.

I am not saying that you need drugs but your GP can refer you for counselling which is always a good thing to explore and even if you did need medication then this coupled with therapy of some kind might be effective in alleviating your current low mood.

Please speak with friends and family about how you are feeling and I am sure that just verbalising your current feelings will help to make you feel less burdened.

You are not alone, just look around you and think about how much you would be missed by your family and friends if you weren’t around. I hope that you begin to feel better about your life soon.
