Blockade is 'continuing atrocity'

Israel’s continuing blockade of Gaza is a “continuing atrocity” that must be stopped immediately, an MP has demanded.
Labour’s Bob Marshall-Andrews said the 1.5 million Palestinians living there were left “trapped and increasingly destitute”.
He called for a Commons debate on the blockade, imposed on materials coming into Gaza since 2007.
The Israelis claim they can be used for military purposes by the Islamist group Hamas, which controls Gaza.
International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander has said the Israeli action has left 75% of the population reliant on food aid and more than half without clean water to drink on a daily basis.
During questions on future Commons business today, Mr Marshall-Andrews (Medway) asked Commons leader Harriet Harman: “As some form of peace process starts again in the Middle East, you will be aware that 1.5 million Palestinians remain trapped, blockaded and increasingly destitute in Gaza.
”Will you find time for the House to debate this continuing atrocity?”
Ms Harman told him: “I think there will be an opportunity following the Budget debate to raise the question of our support for the Palestinians and for a Middle East settlement.
”I think we all share the sentiments that you have expressed.”
